North Beach, Wollongong

From the Surfing in Australia Series by Garry Birdsall

Known to locals as “The Gong”, Wollongong is a coastal city just an hour south of Sydney along the Grand Pacific Drive. Surfing beaches and rock pools line the coastline. Walking and mountain bike trails meander through the rugged Escarpment West of the city and overlook the Pacific Ocean.

Surf bathing commenced on North Beach in January 1908 with the formation of 'Wollongong Surf Bathing and Life-Saving Club'. The present Surf Club was founded in 1914 and is located in the centre of the beach. For more then 100 years, the dedicated patrol members have ensured that no lives have ever been lost on the beach during patrol hours.

North Beach is a mecca for locals and tourists. It offers something for everyone from swimming, surfing, skydiving, cycling and walking paths, to public BBQs, takeaway food at the Kiosk and gourmet dining at the many local restaurants.
